Goal: As an Industrial Designer, your goal is to provide easy-to-understand information about the new or improved tent design and how it works.
Role: You are an Industrial Designer for Dick’s Sporting Goods. Your role is to develop and improve concepts for everyday outdoor products.
Audience: Your audience will be potential customers looking for outdoor equipment such as tents.
Situation: Approximately 40 million people go camping in the US each year. Because outdoor activities such as camping provide more opportunities for social distancing, it became enticing during the COVID-19 pandemic even for those who wouldn’t typically take a camping vacation. During the pandemic, this resulted in a shortage of outdoor products such as kayaks, tents, and camping equipment.
Dick’s Sporting Goods is looking to hire you as an Industrial Designer to produce the most innovative ideas for outdoor equipment. You are going to specifically focus on tents. They are going to rely on you to make all designs with the buyers needs in mind. The tents you will be designing can be a brand new idea or it can enhance an existing tent product to make it more appealing to consumers. You should think about the function, appearance, production costs, and usability of the tents when developing new ideas.
The following terms and definitions may be helpful for your work:
Aesthetics - A core design principle that defines a design's pleasing qualities. Factors such as balance, color, movement, pattern, scale, shape and visual weight.
Essential - absolutely necessary; extremely important.
Innovation- a new method, idea, product, etc.
Product - an article or substance that is manufactured or refined for sale.
Production - the action of making or manufacturing from components or raw materials, or the process of being so manufactured.
Prototype - a first, typical or preliminary model of something, especially a machine, from which other forms are developed or copied

Sketch
The first step toward turning your idea into reality is getting it down on paper. You will need to use your design skills to develop a detailed sketch of the tent for today’s camper. In order to make this the most efficient and sought after tent, you should research the materials you will use to make the tent, consider the aesthetics of the tent and ease of use by campers.
This sketch could be completed with paper and pencil or electronically. Be sure to include the dimensions of your tent when it is erected. How many will your tent sleep?

Prototype
Create a prototype of your tent. You will want to take your sketch you created and create a physical, working prototype. This prototype will help you in explaining your design to the lead designer before it goes to manufacturing. Think about the research you did and what you found out about the needs and wants for the new tent. This prototype can be a 3D model or a 3D drawing using technology.
The prototype should include:

The aesthetics - including the color, shape, ease of use, and weight & height
